April 14th. Two papers mention the ‘burlesque’ and ‘self-conscious clowning’ of the principals – and that doesn’t include me because I played it very straight – so Bobby Lewis has been keeping me down and letting the others do their nuts! Right!

Vivienne came up to Liverpool on Saturday in response to my signals of distress. She saw both shows, made positive comments about where I had it right and I wrote:

April 18th. This is what I have been missing – perceptive direction. This bloke Lewis either doesn’t know or doesn’t care, probably both.
